October 28, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — The acclaimed Actors From the London Stage will come to DePauw University next Tuesday, November 3, to perform William Shakespeare's King Lear. The performance, which is free of charge and open to all, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Moore Theatre of the Green Center for the Performing Arts. The program is presented by DePauw's Performing Arts Series and is sponsored by the Gilbert S. Lance Fund.
The five-member troupe of British actors performs a stripped-down, no-nonsense text-centered version of one
of Shakespeare's most well-known but seldom performed tragedies. Terence Wilton is featured in the title role of the aging king without a kingdom, while Rina Mahoney portrays his maligned daughter Cordelia. Richard Neale, Caroline Devlin and Dale Rapley complete the ensemble, all playing multiple roles.
Tuesday's performance of King Lear is part of a week-long Arts Fest residency at DePauw by the Actors From the London Stage, during which time the five actors will visit sixteen DePauw classes and a college class at the Putnamville Correctional Facility and will conduct a free workshop on acting Shakespeare. The workshop will take place on Saturday morning, November 7, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on the stage of Kresge Auditorium in the Green Center for the Performing Arts. The workshop is open to DePauw students, community members, and prospective students on campus for Fall Preview Day.
