Chris Amidon '87 is Indiana School Nurse of the Year

November 10, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Christine (Anderson) Amidon, RN, BSN, NCSN, a 1987 graduate of DePauw University, was honored today by the Indiana Department of Education as the 2009 Indiana School Nurse of the Year. The award was presented at a luncheon during the Indiana School Nurse Conference at the Wyndham Hotel in Indianapolis.
Amidon is employed as a school nurse and health care coordinator for the Crawfordsville School Corporation. She is a member of the National Association of School Nurses, the Indiana Association of School Nurses, and is also a nationally certified school nurse. She currently serves as a representative to the IASN board for Area 45, which includes nine counties in west central Indiana.
"It is evident through her work that Chris is able to provide both individual and population-based nursing strategies to address the health issues at her school," says Mary Conway, president of IASN. "She is an able contributor to the health and well being of her students, their families, and the staff at school through her health education and health promotion interventions."
Conway credits Amidon for being instrumental in establishing an influenza vaccine program for staff members of the Crawfordsville schools. Her work on this program is documented in an article she authored for the supplement to the Journal of School Nursing championing school-located influenza immunization: "The School Nurse's Role," which was published in February 2009. Amidon serves the larger Crawfordsville community as the president of the board of directors of the Christian Nursing Service. She is also a member of the Wellness Council for the Crawfordsville School Corporation and has mentored some of the students she serves.
"There have been students who have gone into nursing as a career choice, and it is rewarding to think that what I said helped guide them," Amidon tells the Crawfordsville Journal Review, which featured her today. "As the profession grows, schools and their nurses are starting to receive more recognition, which is a great thing."
Chris Amidon's application has been submitted to the National Association of School Nurses for National School Nurse of the Year. The National School Nurse of the Year will be announced at the conference in July in Chicago.
