NPR Affiliate's Report on CTEP Includes Interview with DePauw Junior

July 9, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - "A DePauw University computer assistance program has been cited in a national online magazine," begins a story that's airing this afternoon on Bloomington, Indiana-based NPR affiliate WFIU. It continues, "Higher Learning published an article in this summer's edition praising DePauw's Community Technology Enhancement Program. Student Brian Winstead says organizers refurbish retired computers and donate them to eligible applicants. He says many low-income families are getting left behind in the computer age."

The radio station interviewed Winstead, who will be a junior in the fall. Audio Link[DOWNLOAD AUDIO: "Brian Winstead" 247KB]"We also support a lot of local non-profits," Winstead says of CTEP. "A lot of times, they don't have the funding for additional computers or something like that. We can help them out to, in essence, reach their mission, which is often [helping] these same people."

The radio report concludes, "Winstead says the program is about to release a new streamlined application process that will help increase turnover. He says they currently have a long waiting list and a full inventory of computers ready for distribution. The program was founded by DePauw associate professor Bob Hershberger in 2001."
