Teaching at DePauw
DePauw faculty members have a passion for teaching and use a variety of pedagogical approaches to help students grow as scholars. Since student learning is our primary goal, the University provides substantial support to assist faculty in the development of courses and pedagogies, including resources designed to help faculty assess what students gain from classroom and co-curricular work.
The Faculty Development Coordinator provides the following services:
A. Teaching Consultation
Faculty members are invited to talk with the coordinator about their teaching interests and concerns. The coordinator may assist the individual by offering to visit classes, recommend a colleague who is more experienced in the area, provide additional resources and recommendations, or suggest a pertinent workshop.
B. Faculty Forums
Faculty forums are programs on topics related to the professional work of faculty; they are usually held during the noon hour, and a lunch is served. Faculty members are invited to suggest program topics or to volunteer to present a program on their research, teaching, or other professional interest.
C. Teaching Roundtables
These discussion groups meet once a month and focus on different areas of teaching and professional life. At these sessions faculty members discuss issues such as strategies for dealing with classroom issues, as well as relevant topics like balancing teaching, research and service during an academic career. At some of these sessions faculty members from other universities are brought in to facilitate the discussion.
