Alex Lopatka '12

Alex is an Environmental Geosciences major from Silver Spring, MD. In Spring 2010, he started a student campaign to eliminate campus bottled water sales. Now, he leads DePauw's Energy Wars competitions and works closely with DePauw's greenhouse gas inventory. Last summer, he researched carbon capture and sequestration at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Alex is pursuing a career in research and development of energy solutions for the United States and the rest of the world.

Carol brings to DePauw's Sustainability program her experience in both academia and industry finding common ground among people with diverse interests. She hopes to cultivate a program that is inclusive of both the DePauw community and the local, regional, national, and global communities. Carol holds advanced degrees in urban planning, counseling psychology, organizational development, and human and organizational systems.

Jeane is a hydrogeologist who studies water quality and mineral-water interactions. She teaches environmental geoscience courses, advises the DePauw Environmental Club, and coordinates Women in Science. She hopes that her classes are pathways to more sophisticated understandings of the powerful, interacting systems governing our planet.

Katie Aldrich '12

Katie is an Environmental Geoscience major and Biology minor from Lexington, KY. Last summer, Katie researched water quality effects of urban stream restoration at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. She plans to study freshwater remediation and conservation biology in graduate school. Katie is also a forward on DePauw's basketball team.

Taylor graduated as an Ecology and Society major from DePauw in 2011. In 2008, he joined a passionate group of students and faculty who campaigned for University President Brian Casey to sign the President's Climate Commitment, a document that now guides the campus vision and the aims of the Office for Sustainability. Taylor tracks DePauw's progress through the greenhouse gas inventory, facilitates campus projects, and works with the next generation of DePauw leaders in the Eco-Reps program.

Kelsey Kauffmann

Kelsey co-founded the DePauw Environmental Policy Project in 2007 and now directs its semester program at the Indiana state legislature. Her academic background is in prisons and social justice. Among other adventures, Kelsey lived with headhunters in the Philippines, served as a prison officer, and spent eight years exposing a white supremacist group working at an Indiana state prison.

Jen Everett

Jen Everett served as the Sustainability Coordinator until 2008. She teaches courses on consumer, animal, environmental, and economic ethics. When asked what she cares about, she responds, "As a philosopher, I care about thinking hard about our world; as an ethicist, I care about understanding and seeking the greater good; and as a faculty member, I care about my university being a good institutional citizen," she says.

Allison Orjala is a sophomore Conflict Studies major from Minneapolis, MN. As part of the Information Technology Associates Program, she manages the website, marketing, and social media. In Spring 2011, she attended the Student Sustainability Leadership Summit and later served as a panelist on Electronic Waste during Earth Week.

 

Henry Dambanemuya '13

Conflict-Free Campus Campaigner

Henry Dambanemuya is a junior double major in Computer Science and Conflict Studies. He started the Conflict-Free Campus Initiative at DePauw, leading to a student government white paper and several awareness-raising events. This project focuses on helping people and institutions to become smart consumers of electronics that contain conflict minerals from the DRC.

Dana teaches on evolution, ecology, botany, and conservation biology. Her research focuses on plant responses to harsh environments. She hopes that DePauw's growing focus on sustainability will bring opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to reconnect with the subtle beauty of our campus ecosystem.

Steve Santo

General Manager of Sodexo Dining Services
 

Steve has been a part of Sodexo’s SEED program (Sustainability Education and Expert Development network) since 2008 and general manager at DePauw since 2002. While at DePauw, DePauw Dining Services has been awarded an “A” on The College Sustainability Score Card for the past 3 years in the food and recycling category. Currently Steve is an advisor for the Greencastle Area 30 Career Center for Culinary Education, is on the Greencastle Local Sustainability Committee, is on the Board of the Local Food for Neighbors in Need Committee, and is a Market Master at the local Greencastle Farmers Market.
