Eco-Reps

Eleven first-year students engaged in environmental inquiry, projects, and outreach

Now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 academic year! Find out how to apply here. Deadline June 29th, 2012.

The Eco Reps program encourages community among students who are passionate about environmental issues and it empowers students to be leaders at DePauw and in the Putnam County area.

During the fall, Eco-Reps discuss environmental articles, representing hard science, social science, and humanities perspectives on environmental problems. In the spring, Eco-Reps identify and develop campus sustainability projects in partnership with DePauw staff and faculty.

This paid internship program started in Fall 2011 through a grant from the Ball Brothers Venture Fund.

Elizabeth Dilbone  Granville, OH

"We walk out the door in the morning and are energized by the warmth of the sun and the bright blue of a clear sky, yet the very air we breathe and water we drink are under attack. While humans are the source of the problem, we are also the only real solution."

Elise Nguyen  Ha Noi, Viet Nam

"Viet Nam has been going through a period of rapid social and economic advances in the last two decades, but we have failed to take into consideration the negative effects of the development on our environment. I work for the environment at DePauw so that later on, I can contribute to improving the environment in developing countries and raising the equality in the standard of living of people around the world."

Pete Stuart  Vincennes, IN

"Being nice to the earth is nice, but protecting the environment in which we all live is a necessary, proactive measure to protect everyone’s future livelihood."

Sam Mullennax  Indianapolis, IN

"When I first came to DePauw I was surprised by how sustainable this campus is. We have and celebrate local food, most students walk to class, and we have composting in the Hub. Yet there seems to me to be too much of a divide between students who care about the environment and students who do not. I would like to see more awareness from the other students."

Colin Hutchison  Northfield, NJ

"As an education major, I'd like to educate all students about environmental issues and dispel environmental myths. For example, I'd like to educate students about the large environmental benefits of eating a vegan diet and dispel the rumor that a vegan diet doesn't provide enough protein."

Taryn Hampton  Arlington Heights, IL

"As I got older and more educated about what is happening to our planet, I realized that the little steps I had taken my whole life -  recycling, using less water, and conserving electricity - wouldn't  be enough if my family was one of the few who consciously took these steps. I was inspired to get more people actively conserving in hopes of a sustainable future. I don't want our generation to be the generation that kills the earth. I want our generation to be the one that saves it."

Leif Anderson  Sycamore, IL

"In my time as an Eco-Rep, I would like to promote awareness among DePauw students of environmental issues and also promote the acceptance the realities of climate change. In addition, I would like to help students make small changes in their lives that will save energy and water in the future."

Mallory "Mal" Combs  Barrington, Illinois

"The beauty of nature and how amazing it is inspires me to work for the environment."

Penny Hyde  Gurnee, Illinois

"I love nature and try to spend as much time outside as I can. I would like to do as much as I can to preserve our environment so future generations are able to enjoy it as much as I do."

Olivia Traynor  Naperville, Illinois

"When I visited San Diego as a kid, the beaches and trash on the shores and in the water made me angry. I didn't understand why on certain days you were not allowed to swim in the ocean after a rainstorm. Now I know it's because of pollution washed out to sea after big storms. This inspired me spread awareness about the footprint we leave on the landscape."

Carlie Vaughn  Holton, Indiana

"The beauty in nature inspires me to do all that I can to help the environment.

...I would like to help with sustainability projects on campus and help other students to learn what they can do to help with sustainability on campus."
