Waste

Reduce, reuse, recycle, recover...

The Four R's

If you care about waste management, help influence those around you by following the 4 Rs:

  • Reduce your environmental impact by buying less overall and purchasing “green" products that
    • are post-consumer recycled
    • have little packaging
    • use environmentally friendly chemicals
    • can be reused multiple times
  • Reuse items as much as possible.
  • Recycle items and packaging that industries can reform into new products.
  • Recover materials or energy from waste, which cannot be reduced, reused or recycled.

Recycling on campus is facilitated through Depauw’s Physical Plant but is largely organized through students interested in improving efforts. Recycling bins can be at any campus facility, by contacting Tony Robertson, Recycling Committee Chair at the Physical Plant, by phone 765-658-4238, or by email trobertson@depauw.edu.

DePauw recycles in two "streams"

Co-Mingled

Co-mingled items should always be emptied and, when possible, rinsed out. Lids and paper labels are acceptable, though not preferred.

Mixed Paper

Mixed paper items should have no residue from soda, grease, or coffee. By keeping soiled paper out of the bin, you prevent the rest from getting contaminated and improve some of the cleanliness at the recycling center.
