Four DePauw Bonner Scholar Fellows among 15 nationally developing model

June 30, 1997

Four DePauw University Bonner Scholar Fellows are among 15 fellows named nationwide to continue development of a four-year, national model of volunteer service for higher education.

The Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J., selected the four-member team from DePauw as part of the 1997 Bonner Scholar Fellowship Program. Each Bonner Scholar Fellow receives a $1,000 stipend.

Based on planning efforts during the past year, the DePauw team has created a strategic plan to implement the four-year national service model, beginning in the fall 1997. Called "Bonner Excel: From Connection to Commitment," the model is designed to mobilize an educational team consisting of DePauw and local community members.

The Bonner Excel Program is intended to (1) assist Bonner Scholars in exploring their passion for service leading to a life-long commitment to civic involvement, (2) empower Bonner Scholars to craft their own unique role as a servant leader and responsible citizen and (3) develop in Bonner Scholars the attitude, knowledge and skills essential to be effective partners with the community through increasingly substantive service.
The DePauw Bonner Scholar Fellows include:

  • Stuart C. Lord, executive director of The Presidents' Summit for America's Future, executive director of the Grover L. Hartman Center for Civic Education and Leadership at DePauw, associate dean of academic affairs and director of the Bonner Scholars Program.
  • Jayne Williams, assistant director of the Bonner Scholars Program.
  • Ryan Hays, a senior from Loogootee, Ind., majoring in religious studies and communication at DePauw. He is a Bonner Scholar, serves as a Hartman Center intern and assistant to the associate dean of academic affairs.
  • Ryan Prall, a senior from Bloomington, Ind., majoring in biology at DePauw. He is a Bonner Scholar intern, member of the Hartman Center Steering Committee and participant in Winter Term in Service programs.

The Bonner Scholars Program at DePauw provides financial assistance to help support students who perform community service while pursuing a college degree.
