School of Music to present Holocaust Remembrance Recital

The DePauw University School of Music will present a Yom Ha Shoa/Holocaust Remembrance Day faculty and guest recital at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 1 in Thompson Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public.

The recital will begin with remarks by DePauw University rabbi Buz Bogage on remembering the Holocaust. Pianist Claude Cymerman and cellist Eric Edberg, both members of the DePauw School of Music, will play short selections inspired by Jewish themes and written by composers Max Bruch and Ernest Bloch.

For the main selection of the recital, Paul Schoenfield's "Sparks of Glory," Cymerman and Edberg will be joined by clarinetist Randy Salman and narrator Cleveland Johnson, both faculty in the School of Music, and guest violinist Alison Edberg.

Schoenfield wrote "Sparks of Glory" in 1995, using texts arranged by Frank Oteri from Moshe Prager's collection "Paths of Glory." Prager was a journalist during World War II, and his collection retells actual heroic incidents from those years. Four of these incidents inspired Schoenfield's work. His music combines folk, jazz and classical traditions, and he has been compared to works by composers like Ravel and Gershwin.
