Joe Wilder's illustrious history includes performances with the orchestras of Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Jimmie Lunceford, the New York Philharmonic and many others. On staff at ABC from 1952 to 1974, he joined the select group of elite "first-call" studio musicians who skillfully produced much of America's popular music during that time. He has recorded with Benny Carter, Lena Horne, Oscar Brown, Jr., Kenny Clarke and Hank Jones. He has appeared on the Bill Cosby Show in both playing and speaking roles. Wilder is a highly original jazz soloist as his albums, Wilder n' Wilder, Alone with Just My Dreams and No Greater Love, to name but a few, will confirm. Currently, he is a soloist with the Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra. The ensemble will perform a variety of music from the big bands of Thad Jones, Gil Evans and Clark Terry as well as feature tunes from some of Wilder's own recordings. Wilder will also give a jazz lecture on Tuesday, April 25, at 6:15 p.m., in the Union Building, ballroom. In this lecture, he will discuss his career from the big bands of the 1940's to the present. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in jazz to learn about it from one of its great masters. The concert and lecture is free
and open to the public.
