Award-winning poet Robin Metz will give reading on April 11

The winner of the Rainer Maria Rilke International Poetry Prize, Robin Metz, will give a reading from his work on Tuesday, April 11, as part of the James and Marilou Kelly Visiting Writers Series at DePauw University. Metz, who has been on a reading tour of numerous American and European cities, will read from his poetry at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Student Union Building, room 231. It is open and free to the public.

Titled Unbidden Angel, Metz's most recent book has received critical acclaim for the diversity, emotional depth and feeling of his poetry. In Unbidden Angel, Metz expresses his grief and emotion following the unexpected death of his wife several years ago, not long after they were married.

His fiction and poetry have appeared in numerous periodicals in the United States and abroad. Among his many writing awards are fellowships from the Illinois Arts Council, Harper and Row, MCA; two NEA/PEN International fiction prizes; Marshall Frankel American Fiction Prize; Ward Mathis Fiction Prize, Mississippi Valley International Poetry Prize; and finalist designations for the Ann Stafford Prize, Felix Pollak Prize, PEN/Nelson Algren Award and Atlanta Review's International Poetry Prize.

A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, Metz teaches at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., where he is the Philip Sidney Post Professor of English. He also has taught for the Associated Colleges of the Midwest in Chicago and London, and for 10 years he served as co-director of the Colorado College Summer Urban Institute.

Metz has received teaching and distinguished achievement awards from Knox College and the Caterpillar Corporation, two nominations for the Carnegie Foundation's CASE Award, and two environmental awards from the state of Wisconsin.
