Senior's Art Exhibit features installed sculptures

Whitmore installed sculptures in three rooms at DePauw's Art Annex. The exhibition also includes a video installation. His sculptures explore the theme of nature vs. technology and the origin of technology vs. the final product.

On Thursday, May 11, from 7-9 p.m., Whitmore will talk about his works at an opening reception outside the Art Annex building. The event is free and open to the public.

Whitmore creates his works by juxtaposing natural objects, such as trees, with technological products, such as televisions and computer monitors. He set up relationships between objects to help the viewer think about where the objects came from—their origins—and to question whether or not technology is really an advancement.

For instance, inside a tree trunk at the Emison Art Center Gallery, he placed televisions playing videos. One room at the Art Annex shows a dismantled computer bleeding sand. By showing viewers that sand is a material used to create a circuit board, Whitmore creates a kind of timeline or trail of "progress."

DePauw University's Art Annex is located at 805 S. Indiana Street, Greencastle. Special exhibition hours are 2-4 p.m., May 12-18.
