DePauw Symphony Orchestra and Festival Choirs to present concert

The DePauw University Orchestra and Festival Choirs will join forces for the final time during the 1999-2000 school year to perform the choral masterwork "Nelson" Mass by Franz Josef Haydn.

The concert will be held in the Performing Arts Center, Kresge Auditorium, on Sunday, May 7 at 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The Haydn piece will include student and faculty soloists. Katrina Cline, sophomore soprano from Huntington, Ind.; April Scholten, first-year alto from Phoenix, Ariz.; and faculty members Leo Goeke, tenor and Stanley Irwin, bass, will be the featured soloists. Irwin is also director of DePauw University Choirs.

"The Nelson mass, written at the very end of the 18th century, has a controversial background due to the English naval admiral for which it was named. But the work remains one of the most enduring pieces for choirs and orchestra," said Orcenith Smith, music director of DePauw Orchestras and conductor for the performance.

"The composer's ability to provide clear and direct emotional feelings show a great sophistication that only a mature master composer could attain. For the performers and audience alike, the entire work is truly a wonder to behold."
