Flu Update

The Wellness Center has treated a small number of students with flu so far this semester. There has been no major outbreak of illness on campus and most flu cases have been relatively mild, requiring only treatment with over-the-counter medications and rest. The State Lab is no longer confirming these cases are H1N1 and has notified medical providers to assume that all recent flu activity is associated with the H1N1 virus.

Flu vaccine has been in short supply this year due to manufacturing and distribution issues. The Wellness Center has recently received a small supply of seasonal flu vaccine that we are providing to students who are under treatment for chronic medical problems. Beginning on October 30th we will start offering any remaining doses to all students. Flu shots are given at the Wellness Center free of charge for students and no appointment is needed.

H1N1 vaccine is being supplied through local health departments. Putnam County Health Department is aware of our need and we hope to receive H1N1 vaccine, but we do not yet know when it will be made available to us. Since vaccines have been difficult to get this year, we suggest that students not wait for the Wellness Center to get vaccine and that they get vaccinated in the community if they have an opportunity to do so.

The Putnam County Health Department has a supply of H1N1 FluMist nasal vaccine available to healthy individuals 2 to 49 years of age. They will be having a vaccination clinic Thursday, October 29 from 4 - 8 p.m. at their office on 209 W. Liberty Street. Vaccinations are free and no appointment is needed. You may call 765.653.5210 with questions or to arrange another time to get the vaccine.

Please visit the Wellness Center website for current information about the flu and what you can do to stay healthy: http://www.depauw.edu/student/health/influenza/.
