Fraternity & Sorority Life
IFC Welcome Letter
Dear Potential New Fraternity Members,
Thank you for taking interest in our Greek system here at DePauw. Our Greek life is a big part of the DePauw experience. Being a fraternity member allows for enhanced opportunities for leadership, academic success, small-group interaction, participation in campus philanthropy events, social and athletic programs, and allows you to be a part of an organization for life.
In order to join a fraternity, a student must have a GPA of 2.25. There are no exceptions so we encourage you to focus on your academic excellence your first semester which will then allow for your dedication to it all four years at DePauw.
The process by which we obtain our new members is called recruitment. At DePauw we have a “deferred recruitment” which allows for First-year students to get acclimated to campus before having to take part in recruitment. Official recruitment typically begins in early February. However, during September we do offer a Recruitment Barbeque to introduce potential new members to the fraternity scene. It consists of a short visit to each of the 11 chapters within our Inter-Fraternity Council, which gives you an opportunity to meet and mingle with current members of each chapter.
The actual recruitment process in the spring has three rounds and takes four days over a week’s time. The Recruitment process is based upon invitation and during each of the three rounds you will select the chapters you want to go back and visit, eventually narrowing your selection down to the one fraternity you want to receive a bid from and join.
Throughout the whole process you will be guided by a couple of Recruitment Counselors, who are neutral Greek members assigned to each Residence Hall floor. They assist you in any way you need, starting at the beginning of the school year and lasting until the end of the recruitment process. Each Residence Hall floor will have a meeting within the first couple weeks of school for any men interested in becoming Greek, in which the Recruitment Counselors can answer any questions you may have about joining DePauw Greek life and provide you with all the necessary information needed to register for recruitment. Until then if you have any questions please feel free to contact myself or any other member of IFC with your questions.
Sincerely,
Aaron Weaver
