Definition: Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa resulting from a sensitivity to an inhaled allergen. Allergies can be: 1) Seasonal (pollens) 2) Perennial (dust or mold), or 3) Environmental (smoke or pets).

SYMPTOMS (You may have some or all of these symptoms)

  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Watery nasal discharge
  • Nasal itching
  • Watery, itchy eyes
  • Dry cough
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Low-grade fever ( temperature up to 100.4 F)

SELF-TREATMENT

  1. Nonprescription allergy medication (follow package instruction)
  2. Sudafed

HEALTH SERVICE VISIT RECOMMENDED IF

  1. No improvement within 72 hours after self-treatment
  2. Temperature above 100.4 F develops
  3. Discolored nasal discharge
  4. Pain, tenderness or pressure around eyes
  5. Cough producing discolored mucus
  6. Fatigue due to the use of one of the above medications
