BEE STINGS AND INSECT BITES

Stings and bites may cause a reaction from the toxic effects of the infected venom.

SYMPTOMS

  • Stinger may be present at bite site.
  • There may be swelling and/or redness at bite site.
  • Minimum initial discomfort of burning or itching that may persist for 24-48 hours.

SELF-TREATMENT

  1. Remove stinger by scraping with your fingernail. Do not use tweezers.
  2. Apply ice to site, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Repeat as needed.
  3. Keep area elevated.
  4. Take Benadryl 25 mg as directed on package. Benadryl is an antihistamine and will reduce redness, swelling and itching.

HEALTH SERVICE VISIT RECOMMENDED IF

  1. Previous history of severe allergic reaction.
  2. Respiratory problems - shortness of breath or wheezing.
  3. Welts or hives develop on the body.
  4. Facial or neck swelling develops.
