URINARY TRACT INFECTION (CYSTITIS)

Definition: Urinary tract infection is an inflammation or infection of the urinary bladder usually caused by bacteria.
SYMPTOMS
- Constant desire to urinate even within seconds or minutes after having done so
- A feeling or straining towards the end of urinating
- A feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder
- Pain or burning with urination
SELF-TREATMENT
- None
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
- Drinking plenty of clear liquids and cranberry juice
- Good personal hygiene following urination and bowel movements. Cleaning self front to back from vagina to anus.
- Urinate frequently to wash out bacteria that may be present
- Urinate after intercourse to wash out bacteria that may have been introduced into the urethra
- Avoid wearing tight jeans, wet bathing suits, nylon panties and exercise clothing
HEALTH SERVICE VISIT RECOMMENDED IF
- Above symptoms occur
- Fever
- Low back or abdominal pain
- Symptoms are not resolved following antibiotic treatment
