Definition: Fatigue is a subjective complaint of tiredness, weariness or lack of energy. Not all fatigue in college students is due to mono. Other causes include:
- inadequate sleep
- poor nutritional state
- stress
- depression
- pregnancy
- anemia
- allergies
- infections
- prolonged mental or physical activity
- alcohol
- hormone disorders (e.g., thyroid, diabetes)
- medication side effects
SELF-TREATMENT
- Rest - regular, quality sleep patterns
- Avoid napping, as it interferes with nightly sleep patterns
- Regularly scheduled healthy meals
- Avoid late night snacking
- Regular exercise - about 20-30 minutes a day but not within 2 hours of bedtime
- Avoid caffeinated products
- Avoid alcohol
- Use a daily multi-vitamin
- Avoid nicotine. Nicotine is a stronger sleep-preventer than caffeine!
- Stress reduction techniques
HEALTH SERVICE VISIT RECOMMENDED IF
- Fever or night sweats
- Weight loss
- Swollen lymph glands
- Skin changes
- Change in bowel habits
- Abnormal bruising
