Definition: Insomnia is difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or awakening too early.

SYMPTOMS

  • Excessive fatigue, especially in the afternoon
  • Difficulty concentrating in class
  • Agitation over the inability to sleep, stay asleep or go back to sleep

SELF-TREATMENT

  1. Relax, take a break when stressors mount
  2. Limit amount of caffeine, alcohol and candy consumed in the evening
  3. Do not indulge in a daytime nap
  4. Engage in regular exercise, but no closer than 3 hours prior to bedtime
  5. Observe regular bedtime and wake up hours
  6. Avoid having dorm room too hot or too stuffy

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

  1. Take a warm, leisurely bath or shower before bed
  2. Listen to soothing music
  3. Read something tranquil
  4. Try gentle stretching exercises or deep breathing
  5. Have a warm drink (decaffeinated) or a light bedtime snack. Often warm milk does help! Milk and cheese contain the amino acid, tryptophan, which aids sleep.

HEALTH SERVICE VISIT RECOMMENDED IF

  1. Symptoms persist for more than 5-7 days.
