SORE THROAT (PHARYNGITIS)

Definition: Sore throat is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the throat caused by a virus. Antibiotic therapy is not effective for viral sore throats.

SYMPTOMS

  • Sore throat
  • Fever over 100.5 F
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty swallowing, nasal congestion, and cough
  • White patches on tonsils
  • Painful neck glands, hoarseness

SELF-TREATMENT

  1. Tylenol or Advil (Ibuprofen) for fever and pain
  2. Sudafed for congestion
  3. Chloraseptic spray or lozenges, hard candy
  4. Warm salt water gargles
  5. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
  6. Get plenty of rest
  7. Steamy shower to help relieve congestion; warm mist inhalation
  8. Limit talking or singing if hoarseness is present. Even whispering or mouthing words I inflames the vocal cords!

HEALTH SERVICE VISIT RECOMMENDED IF

  1. Symptoms are not relieved by over-the-counter medications in 2-3 day
  2. Fever above 100.5 F persists for 48 hours
  3. Extreme difficulty swallowing
  4. White patches on the back of the throat
  5. Painful, swollen neck glands
