Definition: Stye is a localized inflammatory swelling of a gland in the upper or lower eyelid.
SYMPTOMS
- May have localized redness and swelling of eyelid
- Is usually painful and tender to touch
SELF-TREATMENT
- Apply warm compress to affected eyelid for 10-15 minutes 4 times a day. (This treatment helps relieve pain and inflammation and promotes drainage of abscess).
- Tylenol or Advil for discomfort.
- Do NOT try to "pop" it-it is not a pimple!
HEALTH SERVICE VISIT RECOMMENDED IF
- Self-treatment not effective.
- Notice excessive tearing, redness of white part of eye (sclera), or eye lashes become crusted/matted together
