DePauw Global Health Initiative (“dGHI”)
The dGHI was developed from the “bottom up” by students with input from interested faculty at DePauw University who have a variety of health related interests varying from domestic healthcare policy to efforts to improve the health in developing nations. dGHI has four primary components:
1.Course offerings including Introduction to Public and Global Health, Medical Anthropology, Bioethics, and a number of others. We hope that in the near future this will lead to the availability of a minor in global health studies.
2.An evening lecture series each month that has had notable speakers such as Jim Morris, former head of the U.N. Global Food Programme; Dr. Kenrad Nelson, Professor of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and Dr. Tom Inui, Director of the Regenstrief Institute.
3.Extramural opportunities including internships and research opportunities, Timmy Fund trips to Central and South America, and Winter Term in Service (“WTIS”) experiences.
4.Service initiatives such as “Knitting for Nets” to provide mosquito nets for those in endemic malaria areas. fundraising for the Timmy Fund’s efforts to improve health in Central and South America, and others.
Students have three committees that are concerned with (1) local, (2) national, and (3) global health concerns plus a fourth dealing with academic approaches to these.
