Alcohol Program
Programs for all students
Targeting 21st birthdays
The Public Safety Office participates in a program called “BRAD-21" (Be Responsible About Drinking) that targets students turning 21 years of age. The goal is to educate and prevent alcohol overdoses when students celebrate their 21st birthdays by sending them a birthday card cautioning them to be safe and make responsible decisions when using alcohol.
Greek 101
Each year, all new members attend a retreat entitled Greek 101 a couple of weeks after Bid Day. A number of important topics are covered including alcohol use and responsibility. A variety of nationally known speakers on alcohol have presented and have been quite effective in helping students understand the seriousness of the issue.
GEAR (Greek Educators, Advocates, and Resources)
There are representatives from nine chapters working within the GEAR program. All representatives have been trained on alcohol and drug issues and provide educational programming and resource information to their chapters prior to Monon weekend and throughout the year. The GEAR program serves students in a variety of roles including being a resource for their membership on alcohol use and misuse.
Risk management training
Public Safety has provided guidance to Greek leaders on alcohol related issues. In addition to providing advising and training to the Greek organizations, Public Safety conducts monthly risk management meetings for all of the Greek chapters. Eight programs are scheduled for this year.
Additional alcohol programming
Public safety provides alcohol programming to individual groups and organizations upon request. These programs include alcohol laws, alcohol poisoning and the physiological effects of alcohol, how to deal with the intoxicated individual and other topics.
