Announcements

Welcome to DePauw Weekly

On behalf of Student Services, welcome to our newest community members and welcome back to our returning community members!

For those of you new to our community, DePauw Weekly is distributed electronically every Wednesday morning to all students, faculty and staff. It provides important announcements relevant to students as well as a calendar of campus events.

All students, faculty and staff are invited to post an announcement or event that is sponsored by a student organization or University department on DePauw Weekly. Announcements and events must be received by noon on Tuesdays in order to be included in that week's edition.

To post an announcement or event, visit http://www.depauw.edu/student/services/DPUonlineform.asp. If you do not wish to receive DePauw Weekly, please email depauwweekly@depauw.edu.

Best wishes as we begin a new academic year,

Cara Setchell

Message from the Interim Vice President for Student Services/Dean of Students

Welcome to another school year!

I hope you had an enjoyable and restful summer and are happy to be back on campus to resume classes, reconnect with your friends and other community members and participate in your co-curricular activities.

Right now, I'm sure you feel rested and ready to go, however the busyness of the semester will soon catch up with all of us. As your schedule becomes full and you find your commitments increasing, remember to still make time for yourself. Taking care of yourself now while you still feel energized will help you remain so throughout the semester. Make it a daily habit to go to the Lilly Center, take a walk around campus, visit the Nature Park, spend time sitting and talking with friends, find a nice spot on campus just to yourself or do whatever works best for you to take a break to collect your thoughts and enjoy a few quiet moments.

As always, if I or my staff can be of assistance to you, please visit us in the Union Building, Room 210.

Best wishes to you for a successful semester!

Cindy Babington
Interim Vice President for Student Services
Dean of Students

If you have information you would like to share about your experience with any of these faculty members, please write to the Committee On Faculty (a faculty-governed committee which makes recommendations to the President regarding personnel decisions), c/o Carol Cox, Academic Affairs, 305 Harrison Hall, or via email to COFcoord@depauw.edu by the following deadlines:

• For Tenure review candidates by August 27, 2007
• For Interim review candidates by October 8, 2007
• For Term review candidates by September 17, 2007

Because of the University’s open file policy, the candidate will see all such submissions. Thus, you are asked either to indicate your awareness of this in your letter, or to complete and attach an open file form which can be obtained at the COF Web site: http://www.depauw.edu/acad/facgov/COFFiles/COF.asp or in the Office of Academic Affairs, 305 Harrison Hall.

The most helpful letters are those confined to personal experience of the letter writer. Since the criteria for review cover a broad set of categories spread over teaching, professional development, and service, your letter should only speak to your first-hand experience with the faculty member under review. It is neither helpful nor appropriate for a letter writer to make a recommendation for the outcome (e.g., granting tenure or promotion) since that implies a judgment based on incomplete information. A formal recommendation will be made by the review committees upon examination of all lines of evidence contained in the decision file.

Emergency Notification System Update

We are in the process of implementing a new "Emergency Broadcast" feature in our protocols for issuing campus alerts during emergency situations. This new option allows all campus constituents to subscribe to SMS text and voice messaging on a mobile phone or voice announcements to a land line telephone.

The name of the service is "JYNGLE", a service of Brevient Technologies. Please click on the link below to subscribe to the DePauw University Emergency Notification group. The form is very easy to complete and your information will be kept confidential. Telephone numbers will not be shared (telephone number must be inserted with no spaces or dashes). Messages from this "notification group" will only occur during an actual emergency (except for a "test" of the system that will occur after September 1, 2007 and be announced in advance).

http://www.jyngle.com/group/fuJtr6XvIx

Please note, you do NOT need a "password" to
join the group.

You can learn more about "jyngle" and their efforts in emergency notification on campuses at the following link: http://www.jyngle.com/

This service is optional, however we strongly encourage your participation to be fully informed and prepared. We will continue to utilize e-mail blasts, alerts to campus media, network bulletins, telephone trees and portable public address systems as needed.

Please contact the Public Safety Office (x4261) with any questions.
