Announcements for the start of the 2007-2008 Academic Year

Staffing changes

Student Services:

  • James Lincoln requested and was granted a leave of absence for 2007-2008 to explore career interests and options, including work on promoting institutional diversity in higher education and projects to improve the recruitment, retention and graduation of men of color in higher education. Cindy Babington has been appointed Interim Vice President for Student Services; she will retain the role of Dean of Students and her office will remain in the Union Building.
  • Other major adjustments include new roles for Dorian Shager has been named Dean of Campus Life and is coordinating the work of staff in residence life and housing, Greek life, community standards and campus activities. Dorian's office is in Suite 210 in the Union Building.
  • Jeannette Johnson Licon will continue her work as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Multicultural Affairs, but will also have direct responsibilities for the Women's Center and the Posse program. Jeannette's office will be in the Women's Center.
  • Cara Setchell has been named Associate Dean of Students. She will continue with many of the same responsibilities - leadership, support for the Coalition for Building a Responsible Community and alcohol programming - but will provide oversight for the depauw.year1 program and be the primary person to work with student issues. Cara's office is in Suite 210, Union Building.
  • Greg Dillon is returning, after a hiatus of several years, to his role as Director of Campus Activities and Student Services Assessment. He will supervise the campus life assistants who are also the new Posse mentors. Greg's office is in Suite 100 in the Union Building.
  • Angie Nally has been promoted to Associate Director of Public Safety. Angie will play a greater role in administering day-to-day operations of the Public Safety Department. Doug Cox will continue to provide administrative oversight for the department and now focus more time on fire safety, emergency preparedness and overall risk management.
  • Greek Life Coordinators. Three new staff members have been hired to provide support for fraternities and sororities. They are: Autumn Hansen, Aliya Beavers and Mike Scheckebier. Their offices are in Room 130 in the Union Building.

Academic Affairs:

  • The Office of Institutional Research and the Office of Student Academic Support Services will now be part of Academic Affairs to take advantage of synergies of those operations with the Registrar's Office and Academic Advising and the Competency Centers, respectively.
  • Caroline Jetton has been appointed Dean of the School of Music for 2007-2010.
  • Michele Villinski will serve as the James W. Emison III Director of the Robert C. McDermond Center for Management and Entrepreneurship and Director of the Management Fellows Program for 2007-2008 while Gary Lemon is on sabbatical leave.
  • While Dave Bohmer is on leave to write a book in Fall 2007, Marilyn Culler will be Acting Director of the Media Fellows Program and Chris Newton will be Acting Director of the Eugene S. Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media.
  • Kate Knaul is the Director of the Center for International and Experiential Education and Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. Jeff Hollander has resigned as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and will focus entirely on part-time teaching in the School of Music.

Admission and Financial Aid:

  • Chuck Ranard has been hired as the new Director of Financial Aid. He is currently Senior Associate Director of Financial Aid at IU-Bloomington. He brings 21 years of experience in financial aid at IU into this new role and will join the staff full-time on September 4, 2007. Richard Nash, the previous Director of Financial Aid, decided to pursue other career options.

Human Resources:

  • Jana Grimes has been hired as DePauw's new Director of Human Resources. Jana is a native of Greencastle. Prior to coming to DePauw, she was the Assistant Director of Human Resources for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Along with her years of experience in Human Resources, she holds a M.S. in Human Resource Development from Indiana State University and is a certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR). Paul Schmitt has taken a position with the Emeriti group (a non-profit organization that provides post-retirement health insurance options for colleges and universities) where he will represent the program to other colleges and universities). He has participated with them over the last couple of years explaining the program in a consulting role as a member of a participating school, and now it is his career.

Sustainability:

  • Jennifer Everett, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, has accepted appointment as part-time Sustainability Programs Coordinator. Details of her work on projects and activities will be forthcoming soon, as will a new sustainability web site.

Office Rearrangements and Building Renovations:

  • The Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts
    The new west wing for the School of Music has been opened. The new library for the Center for the Performing Arts has opened in the new north wing which also houses the Music Instructional Technology Classroom and two other classrooms and seminar rooms some of which are to be accessed by entering through the new library. Burkhart Hall has been demolished in preparation for the new east wings of the facility which will serve the Communication and Theatre Department. Renovations will continue until late September 2007 in older parts of the building which means that the HVAC systems will not be running in Moore Theater, Kresge Auditorium, several new or renovated classrooms, the keyboard laboratory, and several new offices until then.
  • Communication and Theatre
    Faculty members in this department are temporarily (for 07-08) relocated to offices in buildings on Locust Street.
  • Financial Aid
    Has been moved to the lower level of the building housing the Admission Office. The entrance is at the corner of Seminary Street and Vine Street.
  • Conferences and Events
    Will be located for 2007-2008 in the Administration Building.
  • East College Renovations
    Following extensive renovations that include replacement of an old and noisy HVAC system, East College will be the home of new offices for the Modern Languages Department. There are three new technology-enhanced classrooms in the basement.
  • Harrison Hall Renovations
    Classical Studies joins Psychology on the first floor. History and the part of the Economics and Management Department not in the Faculty Office Building are located on the second floor. Faculty Development support has moved to the third floor. Career Services has moved to new spaces, but still on the third floor.
  • Union Building Renovations
    Room 140 has been renovated for offices for student government and campus organizations. Room 130 has been renovated for offices for the new Greek Life Coordinators.
  • Mason Hall and Lucy Hall
    New heating and air conditioning systems and sprinkler systems for Mason Hall have been installed and the roofs have been replaced on Mason and Lucy Halls.
  • Anderson Street Hall
    The second and third floors of Anderson Street Hall were re-conditioned for use for student housing.
  • Walden Inn
    Work is underway to renovate the original kitchen, enlarge the restaurant, and create a new cafe. These projects should be completed and the new spaces open for use by the end of October.

New Building and Renovation Projects:

  • Duplexes, etc.
    Three new duplexes have been added to campus housing. They are located at: 105 and 107 West Hanna Street and 304 Indiana Street. A house at 806 Indiana street was also acquired this summer for student housing.
  • Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics
    This 30,000 square foot building designed to earn LEED-certification is nearing completion. Dedication and opening of the building are scheduled for late October 2007.
  • Reflection Center
    Plans are being finalized for a LEED-certified Reflection Center to be built as part of the site for the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics at the DePauw University Nature Park. Approximately 3000 square feet, this building is to be completed by summer 2008. The rim trail at the Nature Park will remain closed during this construction
  • Lilly Center planning
    Planning for possible renovations and additions to the Lilly Center is moving along. A survey of needs for athletics, recreation, and kinesiology was completed in late spring. Architects will be working this fall on possible designs and price estimates.
  • Union Building adjustments in response to the Social Options Task Force
    The President's Cabinet has been discussing the Task Force's recommendation to convert the bookstore space in the Union Building to a coffee house space. The Cabinet is exploring logistical issues, such as, where to move the current bookstore.
