Announcement of Faculty Promotion Reviews for 2007-2008

The following faculty members will be considered for promotion review this year 2007-2008.

To Professor

Matthew Balensuela – School of Music
Terri Bonebright – Psychology
Mitch Merback – Art
Caroline Smith – School of Music
Sheryl Tremblay – Communication and Theatre
Scott Wilkerson – Geosciences

To Associate Professor

Vanessa Artman – Biology
Ronald Dye – English/Communication and Theatre
Brian Howard – Computer Science
Jamie Stockton – Education Studies

To With Rank of Professor

Kathryn Millis – Library
Rick Provine - Library

If you have information you would like to share about your experience with any of these faculty members, please write to the Committee On Faculty, c/o Carol Cox, Academic Affairs, 305 Harrison Hall, by Monday November 26, 2007.  E-mail submissions should be sent to: COFcoord@depauw.edu.

This committee makes recommendations to the President.  Because of the University open file policy, all such submissions will be available to the individual faculty member.  Thus, you are asked either to indicate your awareness of this fact in your letter, or to complete an open file form which can be obtained in the Office of Academic Affairs, 305 Harrison Hall or on the COF Web site: http://www.depauw.edu/acad/facgov/COFFiles/COF.asp

The most helpful letters are those confined to personal experience of the letter writer.  Since the criteria for review cover a broad set of categories spread over teaching, professional development, and service, your letter should only speak to your first-hand experience with the faculty member under review.  It is neither helpful nor appropriate for a letter writer to make a recommendation for the outcome (e.g., granting tenure or promotion) since that implies a judgment based on incomplete information. A formal recommendation will be made by the review committees upon examination of all lines of evidence contained in the decision file.

Chair, Committee on Faculty

Healthy Living: Balancing Energy through Nature

Thursday, October 4
4 - 5 p.m.
Welcome Center in Nature Park

Eastern philosophy states that all human beings have a need to be connected with nature. As our society becomes more efficient we as humans have become less connected to the outdoors; we drive on highways and exercise inside gyms. Unite with nature as we join Field Biologist Vanessa Artman on a hiking tour through Nature Park. Wear some walking shoes and enjoy the fall air!

Women in Science luncheon

Friday, October 5
11:50 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.
Women's Center (306 E Hanna Street)

Due to the scheduling of DePauw Discourse, we will be moving our monthly WIS meeting to Friday, October 5. However, the wait will be well worth your while because this month we are fortunate to have Cristina Mittermeier. With her background in biology, Mittereier's recent work has used her skill as a photographer to promote conservation and environmental awareness. We are in for a very interesting discussion!

Here is a description of her work: One of conservation photography's newest proponents, Cristina Mittermeier's work focuses on the delicate relationship between nature's most spectacular and endangered wildlife and earth's vanishing traditional human cultures. This unique view of people and nature lies at the heart of her work and is the key to understanding why her images are so poignant and beautiful. Her ultimate mission is to reconnect people's lives to nature through the use of photography. I know that the Friday timebanks will present difficulties for some of you. For that reason, we will have an extended lunch period, from 11:50 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.

If you need to, feel free to come late or leave early. Cristina will be here as part of the DePauw Discourse events scheduled for October 4 - 6. In addition to our lunch, she will also be presenting at 3:15 p.m. in the afternoon in Watson Forum. See http://www.depauw.edu/discourse/schedule2007.asp for a full schedule of events.
