At DePauw, you and the students in your first-year seminar will comprise your mentor group. Before classes start, you will spend your first few days on campus getting to know each other, getting to know campus, as well as getting to know your seminar professor/academic advisor. Your depauw.year1 mentor is here as a returning student who will help you get acclimated, answer questions, show you great things to get involved in, and serve as a support system for you and the others in your mentor group throughout your first-year.
Mentors
The mentor helps facilitate the goals of the depauw.year1 program by working closely with an assigned group of first-year students. Mentors are expected to understand the philosophy and the goals of the depauw.year1 program and to consistently endeavor to make these a reality for the first-year students throughout the academic year.The mentor position begins with meetings and training sessions in the spring and an intensive week of training prior to opening in the fall. Mentors are expected to actively participate in orientation week activities and to maintain regular contact with their mentees throughout the entire academic year. The mentor is responsible for meeting with their seminar groups and their staff teams on a regular basis, for holding regular 1-on-1’s with their peer mentor supervisor, and for attending all required training and development sessions.
Peer Mentors
The peer mentor is a student who has served as a mentor for one or more years. The peer mentor helps facilitate the goals of the depauw.year1 program by working closely with an assigned group of mentors to provide support and supervision as well as serve as a resource.The peer mentor position also begins during the spring semester with meetings and a training period on campus prior to the arrival of the mentors. Peer mentors are expected to actively participate in the coordination of the activities for orientation week and to maintain contact with their mentors throughout the academic year. The Peer Mentor is responsible for meeting with their mentors in staff groups and in individual meetings on a regular basis, meeting with the Director of First-Year Programs, serving as a member of the depauw.year1 Leadership Team and for attending all required training and development sessions.
