Language Department Assistant Program (J-1)
An academic exchange program for non-US students to experience American language and culture, share their own native cultures, learn about teaching pedagogy and develop professional skills.
DePauw University's Language Department Assistant (LDA) Program is an academic student program designed to enhance language learning at DePauw University both inside and outside the classroom, to promote global cultural awareness, and to contribute to a campus-wide learning environment rich in multicultural expression and international exploration. LDAs students gain pedagogical and professional expertise in language teaching, along with the skills and knowledge associated with a demanding linguistic and cultural immersion experience. LDAs immerse themselves in English and in American culture by participating in courses, engaging with Modern Languages faculty, living with other DePauw students and joining student clubs.
LDAs act as cultural ambassadors for their home country and as a resource for students and faculty of the Department of Modern Languages. LDAs are admitted to DePauw as full-time students and apply for a J-1 Exchange Student visa for entry to the United States. LDAs take a complete class schedule, including one teaching pedagogy related course, 1-2 elective courses and a unique practicum course designed to provide supervised, hands-on experience teaching and tutoring.
Students admitted to the LDA program receive free tuition and student fees, on-campus housing, and a small meal plan (3-5 meals per week in campus dining facilities). LDAs are responsible for paying for all other meals, laundry, transportation, international student insurance, and personal expenses.
