Internationally recognized sculptor Patrick Dougherty has been commissioned by DePauw to create a large scale site-specific environmental sculpture on campus made of native materials north of the UB during the month of November. A dedication and naming ceremony will take place on Monday Nov. 19th at 4
p.m. at the site.
Patrick has created over 150 sculptures throughout the US, Europe and Asia over the last two decades. Patrick’s most recent commission was completed at Middlebury college in September 2007. Some of his noted commissions include the Morton Arboretum in Chicago, Cornell University, Brown University, and the Willow Project in Scotland.
His work marries traditional carpentry skills, ancient construction techniques and an evident and powerful connection with the natural world to create sweeping architectural forms. Made entirely out of salvaged saplings (culled from local sites slated for clearing), his pieces flow between the natural and the manmade world. They occupy a space and create a place for contemplation, reflection and joy. As a site-specific artist, his pieces are inherently tied to their location, twisting and weaving into their surroundings, each evolving organically according to the site selected.
