The New Yorkers Born in Peru, Indiana in 1893, Cole Porter began playing the violin and piano as a child and had written his first complete operetta (lyrics and music) by the age of ten. He continued to study music throughout his life, at the Harvard School of Music, Yale and eventually the Schola Cantorum in Paris. "The New Yorkers" is among Porter's list of well-known, 1930s musical successes. Subtitled "A Sociological Musical Satire," the musical offers a glimpse into the high life of Manhattan socialites and also the shadowed world of bootleggers and speakeasy saloons. Decades after its debut on December 8, 1930 at B.S. Moss's Broadway Theatre in New York City, "The New Yorkers" remains a musical gem. With hit songs like "Love for Sale," "I Happen to Like New York" and "Take Me Back to Manhattan," the musical is charming and witty. _______________________________________ Tickets are only $6 for adults and $3 for students and can be purchased or reserved at the DePauw University Performing Arts Center Box Office.
