Directed by Ron Dye DePauw Theatre opens its spring productions with the notorious play, Spring’s Awakening. Written in 1891 by German playwright Frank Wedekind, the play continues to challenge and enlighten audiences today. Original productions were shunned by conservative audiences for the frank, realistic messages relayed in the story. The play explores adolescent sexuality and the grim consequences of repression, and is recommended for mature audiences only. Wedekind weaves a tale of three fourteen-year-olds as they struggle with the stressful stirrings of puberty. Conflicting messages and a lack of guidance from adult figures only increase the feelings of anxiety and confusion. Tensions mount and a series of heart-wrenching events reveal the critical nature and needs during this difficult time of life. According to The Globe in 1917, “No other work in literature so sympathetically interprets the storm and stress of youth at the age when it is torn between its desire and the dread of the unknown. Throughout the past century, Spring’s Awakening has received many successful stagings and received praise from audiences and critics alike. “It is hardly necessary to point out the revolutionary significance of this extraordinary play. It speaks powerfully for itself…[the play] has done much to dispel the mist enveloping the paramount issue of sex in the education of the child,” said writer Emma Goldman, in The Social Significance of Modern Drama. The play contains adult situations and content. |
