TOP GIRLS Top Girls, by British playwright Caryl Churchill, described by the New York Post as “very funny and provocative,” uses a non-linear structure to examine women’s lives in the past and present. Set in 1982 London, the play’s opening scene takes place at an expensive restaurant, where Marlene, recently appointed director to the Top Girls Employment firm, hosts a “Meeting of the Minds” style dinner party to celebrate her promotion. Her guests are influential women, real and imagined, from different periods of history. Guests include Isabella Bird, an 18th c. Scottish explorer, Lady Nijo, a 13th c. courtesan to the Emperor of Japan; Pope Joan, a woman who disguised herself as a man and became Pope for two years; Dull Gret, made famous in the painting by Brueghel; and Patient Griselda, whose story is recounted in Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. These guests, who represent different aspects of womanhood, recount their achievements and their sufferings as they struggled to succeed in a man’s world. As one critic commented, this scene “prepares audiences to see Marlene as a comrade-in-arms of the top girls who battled the confines of traditional roles before she did.” For additional information contact santhony@depauw.edu
