SWEENEY TODD music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim A musical thriller, this multiple award-winning masterpiece tells the story of an unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge on the unscrupulous judge who framed him, ravaged his wife, and stole his daughter. His thirst for blood expands to include his unfortunate customers who find their final resting place in the savory meat pies of the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs. At the play’s premiere in 1979, The New York Times opined, “There is more artistic energy, creativepersonality and plain excitement than in a dozen average musicals."
