Alcohol and Other Drugs Task Force: Charge
For the 2007-08 academic year, the Alcohol and Other Drugs Task Force will split into two subcommittees – the Alcohol Subcommittee and the Other Drugs Subcommittee.
The Alcohol Subcommittee will be charged to do the following.
- Examine how the DePauw alcohol culture impacts the admission process and make recommendations for change. Study formal and informal messages marketed to prospective students, the overnight hosting program, tour guides and fall counselor messages, athletics, etc.
- Study and evaluate how the University trains student leaders (including RAs, Mentors, Greek leaders, GEAR representatives, etc.) in policy enforcement, intervention and response, risk management and peer education with regard to addressing issues of alcohol use. Make recommendations that detail a formalized, comprehensive training program for student leaders.
- Study results from the Core Drug and Alcohol Survey and make recommendations for areas of further exploration.
- Explore ways to involve faculty and allow the faculty voice to be heard with regard to these issues.
2006-2007 charges to continue monitoring
- Clearly define our goals with regard to curbing high risk drinking.
- Review relevant University alcohol policies. Make recommendations for any necessary change.
- Work with existing groups to help all campus constituents understand the severity of our community’s alcohol issues.
- Work with existing groups to re-examine alcohol education efforts from a holistic wellness perspective.
- Monitor the implementation of programming and education recommendations.
- Study and make recommendations regarding issues affecting women and alcohol. Specifically study “pre-gaming.”
The Other Drugs Subcommittee will be charged to do the following.
- Conduct a thorough assessment to define the campus drug culture utilizing the Core Drug and Alcohol Survey and other means. Outline initial steps for examining and addressing critical issues.
- Clearly define goals for addressing drug issues.
- Review relevant University drug policies. Make recommendations for necessary change.
- Make programming and education recommendations with regard to drug issues.
- Examine how the “no smoking ordinance” for Greencastle impacts DePauw and study and make recommendations for how DePauw addresses tobacco
