of Public ServiceKaren Koning AbuZayd Karen Koning AbuZayd received a bachelor's degree in nursing from
DePauw in 1963, and a master's in Islamic Studies from McGill
University. In August 2000, Ms. AbuZayd became an Assistant
Secretary-General of the United Nations, appointed to the post of Deputy
Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
In her early career, she lectured in political science and Islamic studies
at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and at Juba University in
southern Sudan. In her current duties in Gaza as Deputy
Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Ms. AbuZayd oversees education, health and
social services programs for 3.7 million Palestine refugees. |

Doctor
of LawsMorris Dees Morris Dees, chief trial counsel and co-founder of the Southern Poverty
Law Center, has devoted his career to educating others about tolerance and
the value of understanding among citizens of America. Through his
efforts at the Southern Poverty Law Center, founded in 1971, Mr. Dees has
served as counsel in lawsuits that have framed the history of combating
racially motivated crimes and acts of intolerance over the last 30 years. |

of LettersRobert R. Frederick Robert R. Frederick came DePauw in 1943 during World War II.
Leaving a year later to earn a commission and to serve in the Navy, he
subsequently returned to DePauw to complete his studies and was awarded
his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1948. Joining the
General Electric Company that same year, Mr. Frederick began a career in
marketing and management that spanned 36 years. After leading
several major divisions of GE around the country as well as in Milan,
Italy as general manager, he entered the executive level of General
Electric in 1970 and rose through the corporate ranks to Executive Vice
President and Sector Executive of GE's international operations. In
1982, Robert Frederick was named President and Chief Executive Officer of
the RCA Corporation in New York City and headed the company until his
retirement in 1986. During his career he was a director on many
corporate boards, including Olin Corporation, NBC Corporation and RCA
Corporation. |

of LettersAllan R. Millett Allan R. Millet, the Raymond E. Mason, Jr. Professor of Military History at Ohio State University, is a specialist in the history of American military policy and institutions. In 1959 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of DePauw University, Dr. Miller received master's and doctoral degrees in 1963 and 1966 from The Ohio State University. A colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps reserve from which he retired in 1990, Allan Millett served 12 years of active and reserve duty in infantry units, including command of an infantry battalion. In addition to his 32 years of teaching military history and contemporary military affairs at The Ohio State University, he has also lectured at the National War College and the war colleges of the other services, as well as at military and defense institutes in 34 countries around the world. |
