ABOUT US...

A Brief History

Established in the spring of 2000, the Compton Center for Peace & Justice serves as a resource for students interested in issues of peace and social justice.

The Compton Center is a student-centered structure designed to empower students, to facilitate student initiatives, and to foster social responsibility as part of DePauw's academic mission.

Russell J. Compton

The Center is named in honor of Dr. Russell J. Compton, who joined the DePauw faculty in 1951 and chaired the Department of Religion and Philosophy from 1952 until his retirement in 1974. As both a scholar and an ordained United Methodist minister, Dr. Compton has spent his life working to integrate faith, intellect and social action.  Always a strong advocate of racial equality, he participated in the 1963 March on Washington where  Martin  Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.  Dr. Compton continues to be active in the DePauw community, advocating for social justice and the need for constructive dialogue.
