CTEP-4Community-21st Century Scholars Partnership a Success

December 2005 - Fourteen Putnam County high school students have completed a five-week computer workshop series and received refurbished computers. DePauw University and 4Community, an initiative of the United Way of Putnam County, were awarded a $1,000 Partners for Youth grant from the TechPoint Foundation to fund the partnership which benefited fourteen freshmen 21st Century Scholar students. CTEP Fills New Pantry with Generous Plainfield Donation

July 2005 - It only took CTEP a few weeks to fill the storage units in its new location thanks to the generosity of the Plainfield Community School Corporation. Plainfield Community Middle School has donated 150 Pentium III and Pentium 4 computers. The donation to CTEP is among the largest in the program's history and the incoming computers are of the highest quality received to date. Plainfield Community School Corporation has been a major supporter of CTEP's outreach. Last summer the corporation donated approximately 85 Pentium II and Pentium III computers. That donation permitted CTEP to provide 50 computers to the Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School, a new charter school in Indianapolis (read more below). Computers from last summer's donation were also used to establish a community computer lab at the Family, Youth & Community Development Center on the south-end of Greencastle. CTEP Relocates

June 2005 - CTEP has now vacated the house at 806 Lincoln Avenue, the program's home for the past two years. The house will be renovated for use as the DePauw University daycare center. CTEP has relocated its operations to two facilities. Room 013 in the basement of the Julian Mathematics and Science Center will serve as CTEP's primary location for storage and technical operations. CTEP will also be setting up a small office in the basement of the Family, Youth & Community Development Center at 605 Crown Street. This office will serve as CTEP's primary community face and allow for collaboration on computer workshops with the community center. CTEP's mailing address remains unchanged and our phone number is still 765-658-5920. The CTEP staff looks forward to completing set-up of the new facilities and resuming donation of computers later in the summer.

4Community-CTEP Partnership Receives Grant from TechPoint

May 2005 - A partnership between 4Community, an initiative of the United Way of Putnam County, and DePauw University's CTEP has been awarded a $1,000 Partners for Youth Grant from the TechPoint Foundation. Funds from the grant will be applied towards 4Community's goal of increasing enrollment in 21st Century Scholars and CTEP's commitment to providing computers for these students. CTEP Director Receives Distinguished Professorship Award

February 2005 - CTEP founder and director Dr. Bob Hershberger has been named a recipient of the Distinguished Professorship Award for 2005-2007. Dr. Hershberger is one of three members of the DePauw University faculty to receive this recognition "for sustained excellence in teaching and service." Six Computers Donated in Costa Rica

January 2005 - A DePauw University Winter Term In-Service team traveled to Costa Rica for three weeks where they assisted with painting and construction projects. Additionally, the students transported six computers which were donated to the Dicari Elementary School in Río Frío. This is CTEP's third international donation following two donations to programs in Ecuador in 2003. Read more about the donation in the DePauw University news archives.

CTEP Receives Coverage on WFIU

July 2004 - Bloomington NPR affiliate WFIU aired a report on CTEP's activities and its appearance in the electronic magazine Higher Learning. The report included an interview with CTEP Associate and DePauw junior Brian Winstead. Read more about the radio report in the DePauw University news archives.

CTEP Profiled in Electronic Magazine

July 2004 - The July/August issue of the electronic magazine Higher Learning features an article profiling CTEP and its purpose. Read more about the article in the DePauw University news archives or access a PDF file of the journal here (story found on page 28).

June 2004 - Plainfield Community School Corporation has donated 85 Pentium III computers to CTEP. The generous donation is the second largest in CTEP's three-year existence. With the Plainfield donation, CTEP has been able to donate 50 computers to the Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School, a new charter school in Indianapolis with many ties to DePauw alumni. CTEP Accepted to Microsoft Program

June 2004 - CTEP has been accepted to the Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher Program (MAR). This program is a collaboration between Microsoft and CompuMentor that provides operating system licenses at an affordable price to charitable computer refurbishers. The agreement will allow CTEP to place Microsoft Windows operating systems on all donated computers. Read more about this event in the DePauw University news archives.

CTEP Hits 100!

As of May 2003, with the latest donation of ten computers to Russellville Community Center, CTEP has now distributed more than 100 computers to residents and organizations in the Putnam County community. Additionally in May, Director of CTEP Bob Hershberger delivered five more computers to Ecuador. Read more about CTEP's global outreach below. Since February 2002, CTEP has provided computers of an estimated $10,000 in total value to such organizations as the Lucy Wieland Summer Enrichment Program, Res Care, Putnam County Senior Center, The Waters, and Hope's Way along with dozens of individuals and families in the community. CTEP Goes Global

In January 2003, DePauw senior Andy McGovern helped extend CTEP's reach to truly global proportions. A Spanish and Computer Science major, McGovern traveled to Quito, Ecuador for his Winter Term in Service trip. With him, McGovern brought two PCs to the Tierra Nueva Foundation. The computers will "allow for video exchanges between young folks in Quito Sur, one of the poorest areas in Quito, and DePauw students," says Bob Hershberger, assistant professor of Spanish and Film at DePauw and Director of CTEP.

Computers for the Community Giveaway

On December 7, 2002, in an event sponsored by the Hartman Center for Civic Education and Leadership, CTEP provided eighteen computers for families in Putnam Country. Putnam County Comprehensive Services and Putnam County Family Services referred families with children to the event. Along with the eighteen computers, CTEP also provided six printers, two extra monitors, several sets of speakers, and three modems. Seven additional families who did not receive a computer on the 7th, were placed on a waiting list to receive a computer in the near future. Internet 101

CTEP hosted its first two free workshops entitled "Internet 101" on June 20, 2002 and April 8, 2003. The workshops were designed to help members of the community to become more comfortable with computer technology. The workshops have covered such skills and information as word processing, e-mail, web-surfing, and basics of the computer environment. Participants have even received assistance in Internet researching genealogy and for parents, assisting children doing research. The workshops are designed to be flexible in order to meet the needs of a wide range of skill levels and have been well-received by the participants.

Community Civic Clean-up Day

On May 4, 2002, CTEP participated in the Civic League Clean-City Day held at the Putnam County Fairgrounds. The program received donations of ten PCs and a handful of Macintoshes which were soon redistributed to individuals and organizations in the community.
