The Ethics Cauldron:
Loyalty, Leaders and Tough Choices

Raymonda L. Burgman joined the DePauw faculty in 2001 as a pre-doctoral faculty fellow through a program called the Consortium for a Strong Minority Presence (CSMP), which strives to increase the minority presence in liberal arts institutions by diversifying the applicant pool. The program also enables young scholars at the pre-doctoral stage to complete their final dissertation work while at the same time acquiring valuable experience on small liberal arts campuses.

Burgman attended New College of Florida and received a bachelor's degree in economics. While there, she participated in a program designed to increase minority Ph.D.s in the economics profession that was sponsored by the American Economics Association. She later attended the University of Florida to obtain her master's and doctoral degrees.

Her primary research interest is in the area of tax preparation. She also is interested in the alternative minimum tax and behavioral economics. At DePauw she has taught Introduction to Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics, Economics of Income Differences, and Economics of War.  In addition, she participated in DePauw's First-Year Seminar program with a class titled The History, Economics, and Evolution of Jazz Music.  During spring 2007, she plans to develop a course dealing with tax policy and ethics, using course release-time granted through a Fisher Time-Out.

Burgman is a member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Incorporated – Indianapolis Chapter, which is an advocacy group for black women. She served on the board of directors for the League of Women Voters while living in St. Petersburg, Fla., and she was a big sister in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization in Gainesville, Fla., and St. Petersburg, Fla. At DePauw she served as the adviser for the Association of African American Students (AAAS) from 2004-06. She is also a part-time assistant dean of academic affairs and coordinator for the CSMP Program.
