Teaching and Learning with Tablet PCs

This FITS subsite is devoted to sharing Tablet PC pedagogy and support for faculty members.

DePauw received a Tablet PC grant from HP to bring Tablet PCs to campus for faculty to use for teaching and learning purposes. Currently DePauw has several faculty members teaching with tablets. Tablets allow instructors to write one the screen. When connected to an LCD projector, a tablet user can project their ink annotations to the class in real time. This combines the spontaneous on the fly style of teaching with the rigidness of a tradition digital slide show. Software such as DyKnow software takes it one step further and allows content to be shown simultaneously on the students screen and the instructors. Students can then take their own private notes directly on the slide making for a paperless learning experience.

Some faculty members are using tablets to give inked feedback to students on their papers or projects. This ink feedback is often easier to students to visualize and often feels more personal to the students than inserting comments in a word document. Many then post the document with the ink feedback onto moodle for students to retrieve later.

Tablet PC users are invited to call upon FITS for ideas or Tablet PC support. Contact michaelgough@depauw.edu.
