FITS Faculty Project: List all projects
Introduction to Chinese Culture

The website was primarily created to help students outside of class; the material provided would help to supplement the reading assigned in class. Once the site is completed, Professor Mou hopes that the website will allow her students to study more comprehensively because much of the historical context needed for the reading cannot be covered in class. The dynastic charts, she hopes, will help to provide the necessary historical contest. Students will eventually be able to access the information prior to attending class, which will save Professor Mou time in class because she can concentrate on the literary work rather than the historical background.

Originally Professor Mou’s FITS project was created to enhance her Introduction to Chinese Culture course, as well as benefit other professors who might desire the information displayed on the website. Professor Mou wanted to create an educational website that would integrate aspects of Chinese literature, film, theater, and history. Prior to the creation of the website, Professor Mou used handouts in class, and at times she felt that these handouts were not as effective as she would have liked them to be. For her film class, Professor Mou wanted to be able to view a film clip. The website allowed her to enhance her visual presentations and demonstrate points to her students.

Project Description

In the beginning, Professor Mou initially felt that the project was slightly ambitious. She understood that all four portions of the website could not be completed at the same time; rather she is working on each section individually and publishing those pages when they are finished. As of now most of the sections are partially complete. Professor Mou is currently finishing the film portion and is soon to delve into the complex historical section, including the complex historical dynastic charts.

Production Details

At this time the website has not yet been completed; however, the development team has made the most progress on the film portion of the site. Several FITS associates worked together to bring the project up to its current state. More than 40 films on the site have been linked to various film reviews and articles. Professor Mou and her team also added short movie clips and study guides to the film section of the website.
