FLAS - Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships - This program provides academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education to assist graduate students in foreign language and either area or international studies. The goals of the fellowship program include: (1) to assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area/international studies; (2) to stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency; and (3) to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.

National Security Education Program (NSEP) Graduate International Fellowships - This program offers a unique opportunity to expand your understanding of countries and languages critical to U.S. national security.  Each year NSEP makes it possible for 90-100 graduate students to pursue the study of languages and cultures.  If you are interested in studying areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, NSEP may offer you an important opportunity. You can select from a list that includes more than 75 countries and 40 languages.  NSEP emphasizes a diverse range of fields of study, including business, political science, applied sciences, international affairs, engineering, health, law, economics, history, and other social sciences. All NSEP Fellowship recipients agree to work either for a U.S. government agency involved in national security affairs, or in U.S. higher education, in that other of precedence.  The length of service requirement is equivalent to the duration of support from NSEP.  Awards are made for a minimum of one and a maximum of six academic semesters (24months).  For more information visit the NSEP graduate international fellowship web page at: http://www.aed.org/nsep

Humanities Fellowship Sites

SSRC - Social Science Research Council - This program, subject to Department of State and congressional approval, will provide one year of intensive professional and academic training in the United States to NIS undergraduate students. http://www.irex.org.

Freedom Support Act Undergraduate (FSAU) Program - The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the US Department of State is pleased to announce the 2002-2003 Freedom Support Act Undergraduate (FSAU) Program. This program, subject to Department of State and congressional approval, will be administered by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX).  The FSAU Program provides fellowships to second- and third-year undergraduate students from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan for one year of non-degree undergraduate study in the United States in the fields of agriculture, American studies, business, computer science (community colleges only), economics, education (four-year undergraduate institutions only), environmental management, international relations, journalism and mass communication, political science, and sociology. The program provides one year of intensive professional and academic training to NIS undergraduate students. Fellows will complete one year of non-degree academic study at qualified four-year undergraduate institutions and community colleges. Roberts Fellowship  Applications are now available for the  John J. and Nancy Lee Roberts Fellowship Program. This program supports cutting-edge collaborative social science research on Eastern Europe, the New Independent States, the Near East, and Asia. The application deadline is April 15. James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation  - The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation seeks applicants committed to a career in teaching American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary level.  If you are a secondary school teacher of social studies of American history or planning to become one, you may be eligible to apply for this program which offers up to $24,000.  One fellowship is offered in each state for a master's level graduate study of the framing, principles, and history of the Constitution.   James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation

Library/Information Science Fellowship Sites

Library Science -
The DePauw University Libraries offer the Margaret Gilmore Library Science Scholarship. Graduating women of DePauw are eligible to apply for a one-time scholarship to be used for study at an accredited graduate school of library science. A.R. Zipf Fellowship - The Council on Library and Information Resources has established a fellowship to honor A. R. Zipf, a pioneer in the information managements systems.  This fellowship will be awarded annually to a student currently enrolled in graduate school, who shows exceptional promise for leadership and technical achievement in information management.  The amount of the award in 2001 will be $8,000.  Go to the CLIR homepage (http://www.clir.org) and click on the A. Science Fellowship Sites

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Predoctoral Fellowships in Biological Sciences- This program is intended for students who have completed less than one year of graduate study toward an M.S., a Ph.D., or an Sc.D. degree in the biological sciences.  Students who hold or are pursuing medical or dental degrees (M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.D.S.) may also be eligible to apply for fellowship support for study toward a Ph.D. or an Sc.D.  The Program is open to both U.S. citizens and foreign citizens.  Students with U.S. citizenship may take the fellowship abroad.  Non-U.S. citizens must study in the United States. At least 80 five year fellowships for full-time study toward a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree will be awarded.  The award is an annual stipend of $18,000 and an annual cost-of-education allowance of $16,000.  Applicants are expected to apply via the Web.  Program announcement, instructions, and sample application materials: national-academies.org/osep/fo

Political Science Fellowship Sites

Indiana House Democrat Internship Program 
These are full-time, paid internships open to qualified individual who will be classified as college juniors or seniors, graduate students, or "recent graduates" as of  January 2001.  The internships begin during the first week of January and last through mid-May, 2001.  Interns are paid $250.00 per week.  Internships are available to students majoring in nearly any subject.  Participants will be eligible for a $2,500 cash scholarship from Verizon, to be awarded to the most outstanding Indiana House Democrat intern during the 2001 session.  Application deadline is Wednesday, October 18, 2000. http://www.state.in.us/legislative/house_democrats/intern.html.

Women Scholarships, Grants, and internships

American Association of University Women  As the largest source of funding in the world exclusively for graduate women, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation each year distributes more than $3.3 million in fellowships, grants, and awards. More than a century after the first grant was awarded, the Foundation continues a dynamic and distinguished tradition of advancing educational and career opportunities for all women.

Association for Women in Science - About 5-10 AWIS graduate fellowships in the amount of $1,000 are awarded each year, including four memorial awards: (1) Amy Lutz Rechel Award, for an outstanding graduate student in the field of plant biology, (2) Luise Meyer-Schutzmeister Award, for an outstanding graduate student in physics (see note below), (3) Ruth Satter Award, for an outstanding graduate student who interrupted her education for at least three years to raise a family, and (4) the Diane H. Russell Award, for an outstanding graduate student in the field of biochemistry or pharmacology. In addition, Citations of Merit ($300) may be given. Who May Apply? In general, female students enrolled in a behavioral, life, physical, or social science or engineering program leading to a Ph.D. degree may apply. Applicants must have passed their department's qualifying exam and expect to complete their thesis within two years. Non-U.S. citizens must be enrolled at a university in the United States. American Medical Women's Association - Wilhelm-Frankowski Scholarship http://www.amwa-doc.org/Foundation/wf_scholarship.htm
This scholarship was offered for the first time in 1996 and was made possible through the generous bequests of Drs. Hazel Wilhelm and Clementine Frankowski. The $4,000 medical student scholarship, awarded for community service, activity in women's health issues and participation in AMWA and other women in medicine groups, is now awarded annually to an AMWA student member. Medical students attending an accredited U.S. medical or osteopathic medicine school in their first, second or third year are eligible to apply. Applications are mailed from January through mid-April of each year. Contact AMWA for additional information and to be placed on the mailing list to receive a scholarship application. Deadline for receipt of completed applications is April 30. Supporting documentation deadline is May 15.

PGA Minority Internship Program - The objective of the program is to introduce the business side of golf to qualified minority students.  The PGA Tour is seeking to identify prospects for future employement at the PGA Tour and within the golf industry.  All positions are open to men and women of African-American, Asian-American, Native American and Hispanic descent.  The ability to play golf or knowledge of the game is not required for most positions.  Applications must be received at the PGA Tour offices on or before March 15.  For more information go to:  PGA.com :: PGA Professional Management Program

Summer Multi-Cultural Intern Program - This program facilitates ethnic minority diversity in the Chicago advertising and marketing industry designed to provide on-the-job style training across all ad agency job functions.  Students gain practical work experience, establish contacts and are better prepared to assume an entry-level position with an agency upon graduation.  Sponsored by the Partnership For Success, a division of the Chicago Advertising Federation.  Applications due by January 8.  $350.00 per week compensation, less any necessary tax dedications. YMCA of Greater Indianapolis - Minority Internship - This position is designed to provide an individual with twelve months of actual on-the-job training at a YMCA branch for candidate interested in a career with the YMCA, a non-profit organization.  This position requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent and background in one of the following areas of recreation, youth work or education.  Candidate will need tobe highly organized, ability to provide staff leadership, experience working with youth and teens, and a strong desire for a career with a non-profit organization.  Strong human relationship and communication skills are essential.  Salary $22,500.  Deadline for application December 20.  E-mail ldrexler@indymca.org or write to YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, 615 N.
