America Reads * America Counts
(formerly Indiana Reading Corps)

The mission of America Reads * America Counts, a partnership between DePauw University and Greencastle elementary schools, is to provide a high quality mentoring program that enriches learning opportunities for both college and elementary school students.

Child reading bookAmerica Reads * America Counts (formerly Indiana Reading Corps) recruits and trains college student volunteers to work as Reading Coaches for local elementary school children reading below grade level. Reading Coaches meet two to three times each week with local K-5 students for one-on-one tutoring sessions. Reading Coaches read aloud with their students and design individualized lessons for each 30 to 45 minute session. Coaches are trained by the program coordinator to use a variety of techniques to build students' reading skills and to encourage them to enjoy reading quality children's literature.

America Reads began in 1996 as a challenge from President Bill Clinton to all Americans to help children read by the third grade. This challenge was issued in response to statistics indicating that up to 40% of our nation's 4th grade could not read at grade level. Through the America Reads initiative, literacy tutoring programs are able to employ Federal Work-Study students without any cost to the community partners or the parents of the children being tutored. America Counts is a nation-wide program much like America Reads, although the primary focus of this program is to provide tutoring in mathematics. The goal of the program is to help build a strong mathematical foundation for students and to ensure greater college success and access to careers in a growing technological market.
