National Volunteer Week was created in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order to establish the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. And every year since that time, each U.S. President, along with many governors, mayors and other elected officials, has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week. This year, the Hartman House will host an Open House on Wednesday, April 30th at the Hartman House (500 East Seminary Street) from 4:00-6:00 p.m. This event is open to DePauw students, faculty, and staff, and the surrounding community. As one way of showing our appreciation, a raffle will be held with items donated by local businesses. Our local slogan again this year is “Volunteers are the links that hold our community together.” Every volunteer who is nominated will be represented by a link on paper chains that are currently hanging in the Hartman House Multipurpose Room. This Community Outreach program is organized by Hartman House Civic Intern Sophia Bermeo. |
