National Youth Service Day 2008

National youth service day

National Youth Service Day seeks to mobilize the youth of PutnamCounty to identify and address the needs of their communities through service.

NYSD Service Project to Benefit Humane Society

North Putnam Middle School students will be taking part in a supply drive for the Putnam County Humane Society April 21-25.  The drive is sponsored by the DePauw University Hartman House as a part of National Youth Service Day.  The supply drive will involve the youth of our community in a very helpful way for the Humane Society of Putnam County. National Youth Service Day is a way to help the youth of the world to understand their importance in society and that youth volunteerism is always greatly needed and valued.

Supplies that are needed by the Humane Society include cat and dog food, cleaning supplies, office supplies, blankets, plastic storage containers, and metal garbage containers among others.
The kickoff event for the supply drive will take place during school on Friday, April 18th with an educational presentation about NYSD and the Humane Society. The students will be challenged to bring in as many supplies as they can the following week. At the end of the week, the winning Focus class from each grade will be determined.

There will also be an opportunity for the middle school students and their families to get involved in volunteering at the Humane Society of Putnam County on Saturday, April 26th from noon to 1:00 p.m.  Students will be able to walk dogs and help with other work around the facility.  This event is coordinated by Hartman House Civic Interns Kayla Green, a North Putnam High School senior, and Kate Ziegelgruber, a DPU senior.

About NYSD:

National Youth Service Day, takes place the second or third weekend in April and is a public awareness and education campaign that highlights the positive contributions that young people make to their communities throughout. As the largest service event in the world, it mobilizes millions of young people to address the needs of their communities, and educates the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders. Young people around the world design and lead service-learning projects in areas ranging from literacy and the environment, to healthcare, hunger, and help for the elderly. At DePauw, a project is organized by the National Youth Service Day Civic Intern. This Intern is encouraged to consider the mission of the event, community needs, interests of the youth who will be participating in the event, and their personal interests and passions, among other things.
