Chartered in 1997, the Civic Fellows program is a unique service-based leadership development program that cultivates a lifelong commitment to leadership on civic issues. The program requires regular attendance at meetings, participation in group service projects, and strongly recommends individual service as well. Civic Fellows is well known on campus for organizing Giving Tree each holiday season. The Civic Fellows program seeks a four year commitment from members. First-year students who have demonstrated an outstanding record in community service during high school may apply for membership in the fall. Occasionally, upperclass students will be invited to join as well.
Civic Fellows is led by a three member Executive Board. The President position is also a Hartman House Civic Intern position. The other positions are Vice President, and Secretary.. The Executive Board is elected by their peers at the end of each academic year. Civic Fellows is supervised by the Assistant Director of the Hartman House.
Some of the most popular Civic Fellows projects have included:
Make A Difference Day - Trick or Treating for canned goods to benefit the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry
Rake and Run - Assisting local Greencastle residents with leaf removal
The Giving Tree - The Giving Tree Project provides many Greencastle families with holiday gifts that they would not be able to purchase themselves. In the past the program has provided gifts for over 20 families in the community with the cooperation of organizations on DePauw’s campus.
