Graduate Schools Abroad

If you are considering graduate school, identify programs that match your interests and goals.  Talk with your faculty advisors here at DePauw about what schools might be good options.  But also leave plenty of time to research schools abroad.

How long of a graduate program you participate in depends on what you are interested in.  Graduate programs abroad typically come in two forms:

  1. One-year programs that typically last a full calendar year, not just an academic year
  2. Two-year programs that typically last two academic years

Things to Consider:

  1. Look at what research the faculty members in those programs pursue and think about how you might be able to work with them.
  2. Take the GREs – this opens your options to schools in the U.S. as well.
  3. Entry requirements are not the same worldwide:  Many schools abroad do not require entrance exams like the GREs.  As you explore graduate programs, be sure to look at program specific requirements.
  4. Keep in mind that universities abroad have a different style of teaching and learning.  The ability to work independently, reading suggested works on your own and making your own connections between these readings and class lectures is an integral part of college life abroad.  You need to be prepared to be an active participant in your education.
  5. Funding for graduate school is always an issue.  Many universities abroad are much less expensive than in the United States.  While there are a few schools that accept U.S. federal aid, most do not.  The financial support available typically comes from individual department grants.  It takes time to investigate eligibility for these grants.  So start early and contact the faculty in the departments to inquire about the academics as well as the funding.
  6. Consider applying for an International Competitive Scholarship (e.g., Fulbright, Marshall, Mitchell, Rotary, NSEP Boren Scholarship)
