Teaching English Abroad

There are many ways that you can participate in teaching English abroad. Formal teaching requires experience teaching in a classroom and often certification to teach English (e.g., TESOL certification). As a recent graduate, however, it is more likely you will assist a teacher in a classroom, a position that usually requires only native English-language proficiency.

Things to Consider:

  1. Before applying, develop your resume: experience tutoring, working in a classroom, or informal teaching
  2. Remember that just because you can speak English, it is not easy to teach.  Study up – look for books and other materials to help you create lesson plans and exercises to do in the classroom.  Talk with faculty members.
  3. Consider a formal training program, like TEFL – Teaching English as a Foreign Language or TESL – Teaching English as a Second language.
