The Laptop Program

Information for International Students

The DePauw laptop program is a mandatory program. We ask that all entering students, including International students, purchase a “program laptop” from one of our three computer vendors. Go to the DePauw laptop website, www.depauw.edu/laptop , choose your system, and order directly from the vendor by using our links.

By purchasing a computer through our program you will get the correct hardware configuration; the software you need; and you will have access to repair services at the DePauw helpdesk. Our technicians can fix your computer on-site, and they can loan you a computer if you need one while your system is being fixed. In addition, we feel it is very important that you have the same localized versions of the operating system and application software that others use at DePauw. NOTE: It is required that you purchase and use the English versions of the software from the DePauw laptop program as all your studies and academic work will be in English and not in your native language.

The Specifics
  • You can purchase a Dell E6400 from Dell through our website. This special bundle includes all the DePauw software you will need; a 3-year on-site warranty; 3 years of accidental damage coverage; access to on-site repair technicians; and access to a loaner pool of laptops for use during repairs. The software and the repair services are not available to students who do not buy through this program.
  • You can purchase a Hewlett Packard EliteBook 2730p TabletPC through our website. This special bundle includes all the DePauw software you will need; a 3-year on-site warranty; 3 years of accidental damage coverage; access to on-site repair technicians; and access to a loaner pool of laptops for use during repairs. The software and the repair services are not available to students who do not buy through this program.
  • You can purchase an Apple MacBook Pro from Apple through our website. We have two recommended models on this site. These bundles include a 3-year on-site warranty. Apple will not preload our software, so students buying a MacBook Pro must purchase software from DePauw once they arrive on campus. The cost is $225. By purchasing the $225 software bundle, you will receive all the DePauw software you will need; plus access to our on-site repair technicians and access to the loaner pool of laptops for use during repairs. This Apple software and the Apple repair services are available only to those students who purchase $225 DePauw bundle.

Students should review the information at www.depauw.edu/laptop for additional information regarding the laptop program, and www.depauw.edu/laptop/purchasing.asp to order.

Limitations and challenges that International students may face in terms of ordering a laptop and in regard to shipping are discussed below.

Shipping

Computer companies will not ship to an International address due to United States export laws. Therefore, any laptops ordered before a student arrives on campus should be shipped to the Center for International & Experiential Education where they will be held until the student arrives on campus. The correct addressing is:

"Your Name” (that is, the students full name goes on first line)
Center for International & Experiential Education
Durham House
309 E. Seminary Street
Greencastle, IN 46135 USA

Ordering/Payment

Students should order their computer directly from one of the companies participating in the DePauw laptop program. Students need to login to the DePauw web site at www.depauw.edu/laptop/purchasing.asp

Our understanding is:

  • The Dell model can be ordered by phone or on-line using a credit card. Dell will accept International Credit cards.
  • The Apple models can only be ordered on-line. Apple will not accept International Credit Cards.
  • The HP TabletPC can only be ordered on-line. International Credit Cards are not accepted.

In Summary, the process is:

  1. Go to the DePauw web site to review the program and determine which computer you would like;
  2. Contact the vendor on-line or by phone to order and arrange payment. Credit card is the preferred payment method, but you may be able to arrange alternative methods of payment with the vendor
  3. If need be, have the computer shipped to the Center for International & Experiential Education with your name in the address.
  4. As a last resort for ordering your computer, see the note below about having DePauw order the computer for you.

Asking DePauw to Order your Computer

If you have exhausted all methods for ordering your computer, DePauw can order the computer for you. You will need to wire transfer funds to DePauw. Once DePauw has received these funds, a computer will be ordered on your behalf. The process is:

Wire transfer to DePauw to cover the full cost of the computer, including shipping and local taxes. We would recommend $2,000 unless ordering the more expensive Apple system, then you will need at least $2,500.

  • These funds must be above and beyond any funds that are intended for tuition, fees, room & board and other DePauw charges.
  • You will need to wire transfer this money to DePauw. To do this, you should visit your local bank and You MUST INDICATE THE FOLLOWING on the wire transfer

Your full name (student name, not parent name)
Reference “Student Laptop purchase " in the instruction
Student ID # (include if known. It may be available via DePauw e-services account)
Name of Bank: National City Bank
    Bank Address: Indianapolis, Indiana
    Bank ABA No. 074000065
Account Name: DePauw University Operating Account
    Account Number: 000805793

Communicate with Mike Moore, at DePauw University, what computer you would like to order, and any enhancements you might want to the particular system.

  • A final choice of computer should be sent to Mike Moore in writing.
  • The computer will not be ordered until it is confirmed that the wire transfer has been completed.
  • The computer will be held at DePauw for pickup by the student.
  • Since DePauw will be ordering the computer, any rebate or special offers by the computer vendor may not be available.
