Students
Students can recycle in their living units depending on where they live. All residence halls have recycling bins on their floors. Students that live in University-owned apartments and houses can recycle either through neighborhood recycling bins, or in some cases through curb side pick up. Students that live in University-owned housing can contact the Residence Life and Housing Office at 658-4500 about recycling issues. Students that live in Greek Organizations should work through their chapter for specific information.
Faculty/staff
Faculty and staff can recycle in their offices or building. Bins are strategically placed to address traffic flow. Physical Plant takes care of emptying bins into our campus recycling dumpsters. If your office has suggestions for additional bin placement, please fill out the bin request form.
Physical plant
Physical plant staff collects recycling from bins inside campus buildings and takes them to outside pickup locations. In addition to coordinating recycling pick up in campus buildings, the physical plant also recycles many other materials, such as motor oil, antifreeze, tires, paint thinners, and automobile batteries. The Physical Plant also buys as many materials in refillable/reusable containers as possible. Housekeeping staff is currently converting to green cleaning products where appropriate. Questions about the physical plant’s role with recycling can be forwarded to Tony Robertson, Facility Maintenance-Custodial-Recycling Coordinator at trobertson@depauw.edu or 658-4238.
Service Center
The Service Center coordinates purchasing as well as some additional recycling projects. All toner cartridges can be recycled through the Service Center and are sent to a recycling company in Indianapolis. The Service Center also coordinates campus wide shredding days where offices can bring large amounts of paper and old records to be shredded and recycled. There is also a cardboard compactor on site for large cardboard items that are then recycled through Refuse Handling Services. When purchasing items, the University tries to buy paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, copy paper, etc.) that contain recycled materials. If you have questions about recycling and the Service Center, please call 658-4529.
Food Services
Dining Services currently provides receptacles in the HUB for recycling all glass and plastic bottles in the HUB area; bins are also available for recycling newspapers. We use recycled napkins in our dispensers in the HUB. In the kitchen, we have bins for recycling all plastic and glass containers, as well as all cardboard materials and we recycle all of our grease by-products. We provide containers that other groups in the Union building use to recycle their paper, plastic, and aluminum products.
